I articulate
because I like to be well spoken
Not to appear superior but to make myself clear
Lately something has been bothering me. I’ve been told I speak too formal, pretentious, high… I really don’t know how to describe it, but it really frustrates me when people say that. I love words, expanding my vocabulary and especially learning. I just feel like I’ve had all these years of education so why shouldn’t my words be educated and well thought out. Just because I may speak more formally than other people it is no indication that I am better than someone else that is just how I choose to speak. I just get really frustrated because people get annoyed with how I speak, but then when I swear which is something that is pretty much universal everyone is shocked to hear it. I don’t understand I can’t seem to find a happy medium. I like the way I speak, to me it’s normal. Argh! I don’t get mad at people when they speak like fools, everyone has moments when they lose they’re words, so why do I get penalized for trying to speak with a wider vocabulary.
I think that just by you using “more educated” words people assume you are pointing out that your smarter. Especialy in high school because as a general population we enjoy using slang and being relaxed with our speach because it is forced upon us to speak well sometimes…
I say speak the way you do and ignore people… I realize ignoring that can be hard but I think it’s important because it’s part of who you are and people can just deal with it.
You’re right, people should be allowed to speak whichever way they like. Why anyone would have a problem with somebody speaking in too formal a manner, I can’t imagine. Maybe if that person uses jargon that the other person has difficulty understanding, but no, you didn’t say anyone was having trouble understanding. So why would someone have a problem with this? I don’t understand. The only thing I can think of, is that they think you are over complicating your speech, but you said it’s to make yourself clear. So, once again, no clue. Could it be the tone of your voice that makes it *seem* like you’re being formal sometimes?
Maybe I’m just being cynical, but it seems that proper speech and grammar is a thing of the past. Everyone needs to get something through their heads: just because someone uses sophistocated language, it in no way implies that they think they’re better than everyone else. I use a higher level of language because it comes naturally. I am not trying to show contempt for anyone.
If you use formal language instinctively, then there should not be a problem. If people are offended by your diction, then let them be offended. It’s their choice to be offended.
ohhh.. nicole
WE HAVE SPARE TOMORROWS!
Anyways = D. Just wanted to point that out lol ~~
My comment on this is by far more complicated. I will say that i may not speak with complicated dialect or informal dialect. I infect tend to use slang pretty much every chance i get. I don’t know why this is. I just like to make people laugh, yet we get along. Maybe it is because i don’t mis use my words? I tend to talk properly because at a young age i had to learn how to speak. With “well” not “good” and aren’t etc. But yet i speak different than other people (i hear i speak like a newfy = S lol). That is okay though. I really don’t mind. I have fun. We get along perfectly fine though, so i think that if people have a problem with your speech, then it is just reflected upon them. I say this because the person may be a little self conscious in the way they speak so they project it onto you. Or you may sound older than them and they feel offended because there usually in power? I can’t really say. I have had this problem before lol.
